AP Chemistry

First - a few notes about AP Chemistry.  AP Chemistry is hard work! You will need to work harder than you have in other science classes here.

Here is some really GREAT news about how successful my last AP Chemistry class was:

-As a class, they averaged a 4.0 out of 5.0, which was well above the national average!

How to Succeed in AP Chemistry:

  1. Take good notes. Remember, AP Chemistry is a first year COLLEGE chemistry course.  YOU NEED to capture the important details and examples... so make sure to take lots of careful notes during class.  Try using Cornell notes as a method to facilitate studying for tests and quizzes.

  2. Do your homework. It is almost impossible to get a decent grade in AP Chemistry without lots and lots of practice.

  3. Study actively. When it comes time for a quiz or a test, don't just "review your notes." In order to learn chemistry, you absolutely MUST make your brain active. Quiz yourself. Redo practice problems while simulating test-taking conditions.  Make sure not to practice all problems of the same kind together or to always practice problems that are labelled by type!  Mix it up so that you practice the skill of figuring out (under pressure) what kind of problem it is first, then strategizing about how to solve it!

  4. Use outside resources.  I will post links to videos and other reference materials that are available to help you learn more about the topics.  Because we are covering an entire year's college course in less time, we're going to be working very quickly.  You will have to take responsibility for learning some material on your own, just as you will be doing in most courses in college.

  5. Seek extra help early and often. If you see me to go over a few quick questions as soon as you start to feel lost, it can make a huge difference. Don't let confusion snowball!  I want to help you succeed - so please, PLEASE ask for help!!
